September demo features award-winning LAA member, Phyllis Speicher. Phyllis will demonstrate and explain her favorite medium, porcelain art. She has been painting porcelain for more than 20 years.
Porcelain art is an ancient medium developed in China. The paint begins as powder that is then mixed with mineral oil which does not burn in the kiln when the piece is fired. The process involves applying multiple layers of paint and firing after each layer. Each piece is fired 3-5 times between 1300-1450 degrees. The first firing is the hottest and each firing is cooler. This allows the paint to be layered in the glaze.
